Orchard Kitchen
Anthony Edward Kitchens likes a challenge and this Petersfield kitchen certainly presented one. |
Background: The house was bought in November 2010. It is solidly built but dated and the kitchen was dark, dull, and impractical. There was a range cooker which also heated the water and, when in use, was very noisy - it sounded like a factory! A really practical family kitchen was required |
|
Problem: Neither the original kitchen or the breakfast room, which was separated from the kitchen by glazed double doors, were big enough to be practical. The working part of the kitchen felt like a thoroughfare as people walked through it to get from the back door in the utility room to the rest of the house. The way through was awkward. The five doors leading from the room, and two large windows, meant there was a lack of wall storage.
A family of six live here, though usually only four are at home. Sometimes there are just two people to cater for but they also like to entertain. Often several members of the family cook together so plenty of space was required to access the key areas of the kitchen.
The kitchen was north-facing, and the breakfast room south facing, and by being separated the kitchen was dark. In order to make the kitchen work properly the two rooms needed to be knocked in to one. |
|
|
End Result: Our clients chose a contemporary oak panelled kitchen and Corian worktops in grey. The central island has a solid walnut surface with storage underneath and doubles as a breakfast bar
The range cooker was replaced with a new one with an induction hob and electric oven, with a glass spashback. The sink remains under the back window and there is an additional food preparation sink in the corner. The large american fridge was moved out and there are two under-counter fridges for daily use. |

Customer's comments
"There is a great deal of work to be done in the early stages of a major kitchen refurb like this. He spent a lot of time working on the planning stage and finding out exactly what we required before we even started thinking how the kitchen might look. We spent hours poring over lighting plans
"It took a long time to choose! We discussed different finishes, worktops, door handles and cupboard handles and the merits of different floors. Tony brought us images and samples to choose from, and we took it from there. It is such a relief to have got rid of all the dark stained wood, and the dark brick colours - the room is so much lighter and feels vast in comparison to the old kitchen."
"Tony suggested we knock the two rooms in to one, and we agreed. It has made a kitchen flooded with light. He also suggested moving the door into the utility room which makes the access much better."
"It was quite a shock when the work began. There's no getting away from it - having your kitchen ripped out and the house full of workmen which you're living in the house is a terrible invasion. It was made bearable because we knew exactly what was happening.
"The wall had to come down and a steel was put in - we had plasters and people levelling the floor."
"A colour-coded chart outlined exactly who would be working on the site, and when - and they were all so nice. Tony micro-managed the whole project and was always available to discuss our concerns."
"Getting all the plans sorted, and wading through all that detail is what made the project work for me. Choosing the materials and colours was the fun bit! The kitchen really works for us, and it is such a great space to be in. I think it is fantastic! |
